Diwali falls on the 15th day of Kartik month of the Hindu calendar, due to which the date as per the Gregorian calendar varies every year.This year diwali will be celebrated on 4th of November.

Diwali celebrated for 5 days the first is known as Dhanteras ,the second day is known as Chhoti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdasi, the third day is known as Diwali,Govardhan Puja is performed on Day 4 and Bhai Dooj is observed on the last day that is the 5th day.

Why is Deepavali is known as festival of light ?

Diwali is also known as Deepawali. Now ‘deep’ means light and “avali” means row. And that is why Deepawali is known as the festival of lights.

Why is Deepavali celebrated ?

Deepavali is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman to Ayodhya after 14-year long exile and after defeating Ravana, the king of Lanka.
